A satisfying concept clicked: Answers in one direction could include RED or GREEN, while their crossings could include STOP or GO. To me, those three stacked circles on a traffic light seemed like a perfect visual to appear in a crossword. It’s like a little free-association test for your driving habits! Constructor Notes Newton’s notes, below, and realized that this answer was bespoke - (screech to a) STOP and GO (like heck) both work. I honestly had no idea what to make of this until I read Mr. What about 43-Down: “‘It’s my turn’ Comment after rambling on,” which runs through the 🟡 in the center of the grid and continues into 72-Down? That solves to I’LL 🟡 NOW. So, backtracking, STALE is actually GO STALE because of the 🟢 directly above this entry, and 37-Down becomes DON’T 🟢 THERE, where THERE fills in 71-Down, another clue that reads “-.” This double meaning is something we’ve seen in many a rebus, to many a solver’s disgruntlement I found that having them there already, then uncovering each use, was really fresh and delightful. PING? That is the end of an expression for “Thrilling,” or HEART STOPPING, because 🔴 means stop, of course.
Lo and behold, that clue, once again, is just a “-,” and it solves to PING, which I filled in completely on crosses.

The full answer there includes the red light right below this entry, as well as the entry below that, the answer to 73-Down. I realized this added dimension only when I reached 35-Down, “Thrilling,” entered HEART and realized that my job there was not done. Now look at 37-Down, “‘That’s a touchy subject,’” which simply solves to DON’T. STALE as a verb sounds stilted but feasible, and I didn’t blink once. Look at 27-Down: “Lose its spark, as a relationship,” which solves to STALE. These answers add up to a pretty satisfying theme on their own, but at a certain point, I wondered about a second layer of theme in the Down entries - it’s great, and it took a long time to sink into this poor solver’s cranium. The rest of these Across entries solve to well-known terms and products, though a percentage of solvers may know either the mixed drink or the antiquated reference book, but not both. (I always start in the corners, by habit, and either nibble the edges for a while or plow from one to another, depending on my success with clues.) That yellow light was the coup de grâce for my solve and made me wonder if anyone ever worked through a Sunday puzzle from the inside. There are red lights at 1, 3 and 5 green lights at 7, 9 and 11 and a yellow light in the center square. There are seven vertical, three-square-deep traffic lights in this grid, arranged roughly in a clock pattern.
Apparently, Cannabis SATIVAS have the ability to increase one’s focus, which makes me wonder if any solvers have ever tested this and noticed an effect on their puzzling skills. There are always some useful gems of information in the crossword. Whenever you’re tempted to floor it and do a little SLUING around a knot of slow-moving cars on the road, remember the truth about traffic.Ĥ5D. “Twisting on an axis” solves to a word that makes infrequent appearances in the puzzle and just looks awkward, but it’s fitting for this grid: SLUING. Also cute, and another golf pun for this solver to chip away at in confusion: “Treacherous places to land for eagles?” are SAND TRAPS, which lead to more strokes, which tend to put you “over par,” making you lose any hope of attaining a bird-related score.ġ2D.
